How do we make our leather so extraordinarily comfortable?
The leather used for Audi seats comes mainly from the skins of male cattle from southern Europe. To maintain the genuineness of the leather, it is gently refined using substances including vegetable dyes. This creates a material that is durable, long lasting and highly emotive in equal measure.
We conduct over 30 different tests before selecting the right leather. These are designed to check such parameters as abrasion resistance, light fastness, shrinkage behaviour, bending strength, resistance to tensile forces, emissions and flammability. Only once it has passed all tests is the leather cleared for use in seats and interior equipment.
In keeping with the seats, you can add Audi exclusive leather upholstery and trim to the rest of the interior. Here, too, there are virtually no limits to your imagination. You might add leather to the steering wheel, or the door trim, or just individual parts of the seats. Rounding off the range is a wide selection of colours for contrasting stitching, floor mat edging, carpet and seat belts.
Which woods do we use to refine your interior?
As a matter of principle, Audi doesn’t use tropical wood. Even if it’s cultivated on a plantation, we absolutely refuse to process it.
Instead we use classic oak, fascinating woods such as myrtle and eucalyptus, as well as elegant piano finish black. In addition to the woods, you can also choose from a selection of colours and grains.
The thin sheets of veneer for the inlays are hulled from trunks and from what are known as root grain nodules. Generally, we use the wood from just one nodule or trunk in any one vehicle so as to guarantee matching trim. Of course, the cuts made are tailored to the particulars of the interior being equipped. The centre console always presents a particular challenge – and it is one that must be mastered anew each time, since each model has a different console that requires specific recesses depending on the equipment. Manufacture is a symbiosis of hand finishing and mechanical production – several work steps such as milling use both, whereas others are performed purely by hand.
